The story of Evenmere

A still lake at the heart of a restless world

Far in the North lies Evenmere, a world of granite fells, birch forests and four strong seasons, ringed by a restless sea. Storms cross it every year. Yet at its heart lies a wide lake whose water stays calm in every weather. The people of Evenmere call it Stillwater.

Something lives there that has no single shape. It is a light that never goes out. On winter nights it is the brightest flicker in the northern lights. In spring it glows inside the rising mist. In summer it is the sun that refuses to set, mirrored on still water, and in autumn the light resting on a single red leaf. Those who have seen it call it the Seer.

The Seer never speaks and never foretells. It only shows. On a granite isle in the middle of Stillwater, Halla keeps the lantern where the Seer’s flame rests, so that anyone lost in Evenmere can find the still place again.

“The Seer is the light that never goes out. Look closely, and you’ll find it in you too.”

The Seer

Neither person nor animal, but a light that never goes out. A flicker in the northern lights, a glow in the mist, the sun on still water, the light on a red leaf. Look for the small flame: it is always there somewhere.

The people of Evenmere

Halla, the Lantern Keeper, sees the Seer in stillness. Aava, the Traveller, by searching. Tarmo, the Stonemason, through work. Vuori, the Fell Guide, from high places. Routa, the Ice Keeper, in the longest winter.

The Stone

Permanence. What stays when the storm has passed.

The Pine

Roots in rock. Growing where it is hard to grow.

Still Water

Clarity. When the surface is calm, you see the depth.

The Lantern

Where the Seer’s flame rests. A small light kept burning.

The Mark

One mark a day. Small steady acts that become a life.

The map of Evenmere

Find your way to the still place

The high northern fells, home of the Polar Night. Climb slowly and see far.

Tarmo’s Cairns

Stone markers along the western trail, one stone a day, guiding the lost back to the lake.

Aava’s Landing

The jetty on Stillwater’s eastern shore, where every traveller arrives as the ice breaks in the Thaw.

Routa’s Ice Road

When Stillwater freezes, Routa keeps a road open across the ice to Halla’s isle, through the longest night.

The Restless Sea

The wild sea around Evenmere. The storms come from here. The calm is found inland.
