The story of Stillwater
A still place in a stormy lake
Far in the North lies a lake so wide that its far shore is only a rumour. Storms cross it every season, yet at its centre there is one place where the water is always still. There, on an island of ancient granite, a pine has grown straight out of the rock for four hundred years.
Vaira was once a ferrywoman. One winter the storm was stronger than her oars. She did not fight it. She held the boat steady and watched, until the wind tired before she did. When the sky cleared, she could see further than ever before.
She stayed on the island and carved one small mark into the stone for every day she held steady. People began to row out to her, not for prophecy, but for perspective.
